The June SAT (2005) essay prompts.

College Board has released the June SAT (2005) essay prompts. Four essay topics appeared on the SAT in June 2005, but only three are currently divulged on the College Board site.

The June SAT essay prompts are paraphrased here:
  • SAT Essay Prompt 1: Do memories help people to learn from the past and to succeed in the present, or do they keep people from doing so?
  • SAT Essay Prompt 2: Do people give too much value to learning practical skills in life?
  • SAT Essay Prompt 3: Should moral and social issues be taught or discussed in schools?
  • SAT Essay Prompt 4: To what extent do the various media (television, radio, newspaper, etc.) influence people?
Prompts 2 and 3 seem like good prompts, but the first one seems absurd--it is effectively asking whether memories are important in learning from the past and applying those lessons to the present. I'd be very interested to know of a situation in which memories are not related to learning from the past. Yes, I suppose you could discuss learning about the past through others or through the various media, but who would argue that one's own memories and experiences have less influence than lessons learned second-hand?
